About Commercial Truck Driver Licensing

In Ontario, commercial driving positions have particular licensing requirements for drivers. Divided into two broad categories, “A” and “D,” based on vehicle and trailer weight, with the “Z” designation added for air brake endorsement.

A DZ license is required to drive any vehicle that weighs more than 11,000 kg (24,000 lbs) or a vehicle of the same weight towing a trailer of up to 4,600 kg (roughly 10,000 lbs). This license is required for many delivery service positions, but it also allows a DZ driver to drive vehicles such as garbage trucks, cement trucks, dump trucks, and other construction vehicles.

In most cases, DZ drivers are primarily responsible for the timely delivery of goods within the same city or to nearby cities, including any logistics necessary to safely load or unload their vehicles.
